I've been neglecting this site, perhaps because my other blog of the NYC photographs is more fun for me to work on, or I'm getting home too late to concentrate on both of them, especially since I'm not getting much painting done; but whatever the problem is, I apologize. Here's my most recent piece, 12" x 12" this time, and it's the direction I intend to go in. But, in the meantime, if you're not already doing so, I invite you over to the photography blog since this week is all about the Gay Pride Parade.

I had been at a loss as to what to post next because I have started a new series that I'm not ready to show yet. Then I thought I could show you where I spend most of my time when I'm home. There's Windy, above my Mac, with my little Hindu rubber finger puppets and my Murakami Mr. DOB mouse pad, as well as one of my NYC waterfront photos as my screen saver, which if you follow my other blog, should be familiar. On the wall above Windy is one of my abstract paintings from the 90's, and two paintings by Alex Norwood that look like angels to me. If I get his permission, I'll include them in my posts about influences on my work.

Maybe not the most successful of the 8x8 recent eyeball angels, Windy is my personal favorite. It is hanging right above my computer where I can look at it to my heart's content. I couldn't even tell you why I like it the best, but it was also the last in the series of 12 that I did this spring, and I felt like it achieved all that I was trying to accomplish with them.

Tulip, obviously. Can you tell what movie I watched the night before I painted this? Need a hint? Perky, resourceful, highly effective robot with with opera glasses for eyes.... I actually repainted him, this is the final outcome, because originally the eyes were even bigger and more sappy. I know it's hard to believe but ultimately I do have my limits for schmaltz.

And Lavinia's mirror image, kissing cousin, Pearlie. Totally high gloss, looking at this makes me want to work metallic again. Going back to the Murakami work from last week, I could use a silver background and still keep the angel matte like the most recent paintings. That's part of the beauty of being an artist, I can do what I want, they are my angel paintings after all, and if you like it, great. I do them for me ultimately.

Lavinia, the Mama, and I have to admit that as much as I like the angel in the previous post, this is a much better painting. Not as much fun to look at, but I was at the top of my game when I did this. It's not a great image of it though, it has a high sheen surface, the angel is gold and copper with bits of red and yellow giving it texture, and the blue has an iridescence that can't be seen even in my  best professional photos of it.

Baby Lavinia, tomorrow her Mama; I started my blogging by catching up on the more entertaining blogs I follow and spent way too much time snickering at Tristan and Crikey, too funny, you guys. But I'd also like you all to look at this link to Laurie's post today and tell me if it reminds you of anything. -  Creating Pictures in my Mind: Faces in the Trees 3

One more Murakami, the original of this is huge. Perhaps 15 feet high and at least 20 wide. All those little guys around the bottom are highly detailed. The notes I made when I was there were about his palette, the matte pastels on a shiny silver background. Later I thought about how round all the eyes are, one of the rooms was done entirely in a pink and pale green wall paper of eyes with paintings of the same motif hung on it, Glorious, but he is Japanese. Dare I even mention the mushrooms?
